Therapy for Faith, Spirituality,

and Identity in Philadelphia

Askin Psychotherapy offers therapy for religious and spiritual people in Philadelphia and Mt. Airy, including support for Jewish, Muslim, and other faith communities, as well as telehealth across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

We are a secular therapy practice. While members of our team come from a range of personal backgrounds and relationships to religion our work is not grounded in any particular faith tradition. At the same time, we recognize that religion and spirituality can be central to identity and community. Therapy can offer a space to explore your relationship to religion or spirituality with curiosity, and respect.

Therapy that respects your beliefs

We work with individuals from a wide range of religious and spiritual backgrounds, including many who identify as Jewish or Muslim, as well as those from other faith traditions and those questioning or redefining their relationship to religion. Our role is not to shape or direct your beliefs, but to help you understand how your experiences within and beyond your religious context are influencing your relationships and sense of self. Our team includes therapists who identify as Jewish and Muslim which can offer an additional layer of understanding for clients seeking culturally competent therapy.

Navigating conflict, doubt, and change

Therapy can be a place to explore questions that may feel difficult to name elsewhere. This might include navigating differences in belief within relationships or families, working through experiences of judgment or exclusion, or making sense of values that feel in tension. For some, this work is about resolving conflict. For others, it is about finding ways to live more fully in accordance with your values. There is space here for complexity and ambivalence without pressure to arrive at a particular conclusion.

Navigating family and religious differences

Changes in your relationship to religion can also impact your relationships with family or a partner. You may find yourself becoming more or less religious than those around you, or living as a queer person that feel at odds with your family’s beliefs. This can bring up feelings of grief and guilt especially when there is a desire to stay connected while also being true to yourself. Therapy can offer a space to think through these dynamics and help you clarify your values and find ways of relating to family that feel honest and kind.

Religious identity, sexual orientation, and gender identity

Religious identity often intersects with other important parts of who you are including sexuality and gender identity and expression. For some particularly those who are LGBTQ this can create tension or a sense of being pulled in different directions. We offer queer affirming therapy and support individuals in finding ways to relate to themselves and their communities that feel integrated.

Therapy for clergy and religious leaders

We offer therapy for clergy and religious leaders in Philadelphia. These roles often involve significant responsibility and emotional labor with limited space to process your own experience. Therapy can provide a place where you don’t have to be in a leadership role -where you can reflect, speak freely, and receive support
